Accra, July 2–3, 2025 Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed a landmark official visit to the Republic of Ghana the first bilateral trip by an Indian head of government in over three decades. He was received with full state honours and conferred the title of Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the highest national distinction currently awarded by the Ghanaian government.
This rare honour, bestowed by President Ibrahim Mahamat, reflects Ghana’s recognition of India’s growing role in global diplomacy, its longstanding engagement with Africa, and Prime Minister Modi’s personal leadership on the world stage.

Strategic Partnership in the Making
Talks between the two leaders resulted in a series of agreements covering key areas such as bilateral trade (already nearing USD 3 billion), digital transformation, cybersecurity, education, defence, agriculture, public health, and energy infrastructure.
Ghana a politically stable West African nation and an active ECOWAS member sees India as a credible partner in its quest for sustainable development, economic diversification, and technological innovation.
BRICS & South-South Diplomacy: India’s Strategic Messaging
As a founding and influential member of the BRICS alliance, India is asserting itself as a major player in shaping a multipolar world. Within this context, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ghana goes far beyond bilateral symbolism. It forms part of a deliberate strategy to consolidate an Afro-Asian axis rooted in cooperation, investment, and mutual respect principles central to the BRICS+ vision.
