

Established on May 25/1963 , Organization of African Unity highly focused on pan-Africanism , unity and solidarity within the African States. The foundation of OAU not only helped create a vast platform for Pan-Africanisim but also showed the power of independence with the motto today “African Solutions to African Problems”.
During its establishment , the Organization of African Unity provided a platform for countries still under colonial rule to gain support for their independence movements , sought to create political stability by mediating conflicts and promoting peaceful resolutions, helping to stabilize the continent during a period of political upheaval , sharpened the principle of self-determination, advocating for the rights of African nations to govern themselves without interference , and promoted cultural ties and exchanges among African countries, celebrating the continent’s rich in culture and diversity.

The Sirte Declaration , one of the key and vital elements in the process of establishing the Organization of African Unity on September 9 , 1999 by Heads of State. 1st President of Ghana , H.E. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was a pivotal figure in the African independence movement and the founding father of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) He played an immense role in advocating for Pan-Africanism and unity among African nations. His vision was to promote political ,economic cooperation across the continent, aiming to counter colonialism and imperialism. Dr. Nkrumah’s leadership in Ghana has set a precedent for other African nations seeking independence, and his ideas continue to influence contemporary discussions about African unity and development.
Later on in 2002 , Durban- South Africa , the Organization of African Unity was officially replaced by the today African Union (AU) focusing highly on Peace and Security reforms , Economic Integration including several infrastructures , and democratic practices on governance. Former Libyan ruler
played a significant role in the establishment of the African Union. He provided substantial financial resources to support the OAU and later the AU, helping to fund its initiatives and operations. Gaddafi also used Libya’s position and resources to promote the idea of a continental government, pushing for greater political integration.

The African Union developed AGENDA 2063 , a strategic framework with the visions and goal of creating a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development. Key factors included the launch of African Continental Free Trade Area implementation , fostering innovation and technology by providing the rightful skill and several education programs , such as the STEM officially partnering with UNESCO. Today the African Union celebrates its 62nd Anniversary with the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”
