ADDIS ABABA – 23 Kebele, Tabot Madariya, In a heartfelt display of camaraderie and remembrance, former Ethiopian football players who dominated the national league in the 1970s gathered on 18 August 2018 E.C. (26 May 2026) at the 23 Kebele Tabot Madariya to honour their late teammates and brothers.

The players, who twice lifted the championship trophy while representing the former high‑level team 23 Kebele 09 (now designated as District 05, Ketela 08), organised a special memorial programme that blended solemn tribute with celebration of their shared sporting legacy.

Coordinators Laud Teamwork and Sacrifice

The event was spearheaded by Teferea Adefers (also known as Teferea Adefers), who served as chief coordinator. Mr. Teferea was instrumental in both fundraising and logistical coordination. Widely respected in his home village of 08 and surrounding areas, he is known for his philanthropic work, particularly in supporting the underprivileged.

Merasha Shenkute, co‑coordinator, received special praise for dedicating his time, energy, and personal finances to the event from start to finish. Additional acknowledgement was given to Tekleab Berhane and Sirak Getachew for their critical roles in guiding the programme.

A Legacy of Integrity and Discipline

Speakers at the event highlighted the exemplary character of the former players. They were described as morally upright, family‑oriented, deeply respected by their community, deferential to elders, and consistently law‑abiding. Organisers noted that these qualities offer a powerful model for Ethiopia’s youth today.

Four Key Objectives

Chief coordinator Teferea Adefers outlined four main goals behind the memorial:

1. Remembrance and solidarity – To honour fallen teammates and express continued support for their families.
2. Career inspiration – To encourage young Ethiopians to view football as a legitimate and rewarding career path.
3. Youth development – To promote civic responsibility, care for community, and positive role‑modelling among the younger generation in the district.
4. Policy advocacy – To remind local authorities that investment in sports can significantly reduce youth unemployment.

From Local Kebele to National Stage

Many of the honoured players began their careers in this very kebele before rising to represent some of Ethiopia’s most prominent football clubs. These include St. George, Ethiopian Coffee, Chimada, Kera Church, Medhin Fabrika, Bèle Printing Factory, Tikur Anbesa, Mashemene City, and Debub Shewa. Their achievements brought lasting pride to their home community.

A Continuing Tradition

Organisers expressed hope that the memorial will serve as a lasting symbol of unity and mutual support for both the district’s youth and the wider community. Mr. Teferea and his team have confirmed that the event will be held regularly in the years to come, ensuring that the legacy of their fallen brothers endures.
