In a pivotal address at the African Union headquarters philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates announced that the majority of his foundation’s unprecedented $200 billion commitment will be invested in Africa over the next two decades. The announcement marks one of the largest private development pledges in history, with a focus on health innovation and sustainable growth across the continent.

The funding will target three critical areas:

Gates highlighted Africa’s remarkable progress in health outcomes citing Rwanda’s AI-powered prenatal care and Ethiopia’s fortified nutrition programs as models of innovation. “Investing in primary healthcare delivers the highest return for societiesGates noted, pointing to data showing how early childhood interventions create lifelong benefits.

The Microsoft founder drew parallels to Africa’s mobile banking revolution predicting similar breakthroughs in healthcare technology. “Just as Africa leapfrogged traditional banking systems, it can now pioneer AI-enhanced healthcare delivery,” he said, praising young African innovators developing localized solutions.

The announcement was welcomed by prominent African leaders including:
