The African Union Commission (AUC) has issued a formal statement expressing concern over the latest travel restrictions announced by the Government of the United States, which affect nationals from several countries, including a number on the African continent.
While affirming the right of every sovereign nation to control its borders and ensure national security, the AUC urged the U.S. administration to exercise such powers with balance, transparency, and regard for the longstanding partnership between the United States and Africa.
“The African Union Commission respectfully appeals to the United States to exercise this right in a manner that is balanced, evidence-based, and reflective of the long-standing partnership between the United States and Africa,” the statement said.
The Commission warned that the travel restrictions could have unintended consequences for academic exchanges, business ties, cultural linkages, and diplomatic relations that have been cultivated over many decades. These people-to-people and institutional connections, the AUC noted, are essential to promoting mutual understanding and shared progress.
With Africa and the United States sharing mutual interests in peace, prosperity, and global cooperation, the Commission emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue and collaboration when addressing issues of international mobility and security.
“The Commission remains concerned about the potential negative impact of such measures on people-to-people ties, educational exchange, commercial engagement, and the broader diplomatic relations that have been carefully nurtured over decades,” the statement continued.
Calling for a more consultative approach, the African Union encouraged the U.S. to engage directly with the governments of the affected countries and work together to address any underlying concerns that may have led to the decision. It also stressed the need for transparent communication and constructive problem-solving.
“The Commission stands ready to support efforts that promote understanding, resolve concerns, and strengthen cooperation between Africa and the United States,” the AUC affirmed.
