The Illame Convention Center in Addis Ababa hosted the annual Heritage Day commemorating the legacy of Reverend Gudina Tumsa on Wednesday, bringing together church leaders, theologians, academics, members of the Gudina Tumsa Foundation, family representatives, and believers to honor the life, ministry, and enduring legacy of one of the most influential Christian figures in Ethiopian history.
A Shepherd in Service of the Church and Justice
Reverend Gudina Tumsa (1929–1979) served as the General Secretary of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) and remains one of Africa’s most distinguished Lutheran theologians. Born in Bodji, Wollega, he devoted his life to strengthening the Ethiopian Church through biblical teaching, theological reflection, courageous leadership, and an unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity.
Throughout his ministry, Reverend Gudina Tumsa played a pivotal role in establishing the Council for the Cooperation of Churches in Ethiopia, becoming its first president. He championed Christian unity while encouraging the Ethiopian Church to develop an authentic theological voice rooted in Scripture and responsive to the realities of African society. His writings, sermons, and international engagements continue to inspire believers around the world.

The “Dietrich Bonhoeffer of Africa”
Reverend Gudina Tumsa was abducted and killed by soldiers of the Derg regime on July 28, 1979. His courageous witness and ultimate sacrifice earned him lasting respect within the global Christian community. He is widely recognized as the “Dietrich Bonhoeffer of Africa,” a title that reflects his fearless faith and his indelible impact on the Church.
