BRICS Foreign Ministers Meet in Rio to Address Global Crises and Trade War Challenges

Addis Abeba April /29/2025-—– BRICS foreign ministers convened in Rio de Janeiro for a critical meeting to discuss the bloc’s role in tackling global and regional crises, including their collective response to the ongoing trade war with the United States. The gathering, hosted by Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, highlighted the group’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation amid rising geopolitical tensions. 

In his opening remarks, Vieira underscored BRICS’ unique position in promoting global peace and stability through dialogue

With 11 member states representing nearly half of the world’s population and encompassing vast geographic and cultural diversity, BRICS is uniquely positioned to foster peace and stability,
he stated. He also stressed the urgent need for reforming international institutions, including the UN Security Council, to better reflect contemporary global realities. 

The meeting was attended by high-profile diplomats, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and addressed pressing issues such as escalating tensions in Africa and humanitarian crises in Ukraine, Haiti, and Gaza. 

Vieira condemned the worsening situation in Gaza, stating, The resumption of Israeli bombings and the continued obstruction of humanitarian aid are unacceptable.

The discussions are set to continue until Tuesday, with expectations of further deliberations on economic cooperation and strategies to counter trade protectionism.
