On May 01/2025/Johannesburg, South Africa – Police discovered 44 people’s , believed to be mostly Ethiopians and Pakistanis, locked inside a house in the upscale suburb of Parkmore on Tuesday. The discovery came after authorities responded to a tip-off about suspicious activity at the residence.

According to security strategist Andy Mashaile, a private security company first arrived at the scene and found the men confined in a room. “The images from the scene show how human traffickers have exploited South Africa as a haven for their criminal operations,” Mashaile stated.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that officers gained entry and found the group, who claimed they had been locked inside the house. “At this stage, we are treating them as undocumented migrants, but there is a strong possibility they are victims of human trafficking,” Masondo said.

Authorities are investigating whether the men were being held as part of a broader human smuggling or forced labor ring. While initial reports suggested all were Ethiopian, further verification revealed that 27 were Ethiopian nationals and 17 were from Pakistan.

Human trafficking remains a serious issue in South Africa, with criminal networks often targeting vulnerable migrants. Police have opened a trafficking case and are working with immigration officials to determine the victims’ statuses and how they entered the country.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns over transnational crime syndicates operating in South Africa, with calls for stricter border controls and anti-trafficking measures.

Updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
