On April 28,2028  the Russian Embassy discussed with the Ethiopian Minister of Culture and Sports to strengthen their cooperation in culture, art, and sports.

Ethiopia and Russia are taking steps to deepen their bilateral ties through enhanced collaboration in culture, arts, and sports. This development follows a high-level meeting between Ethiopia’s Minister of Culture and Sports, Shiwet Shanka, and Russia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, held at the minister’s office.

Focus on Shared Cultural and Artistic Exchange
The discussions centered on expanding partnerships between the two nations in cultural preservation, artistic exchanges, and sports development. Minister Shiwet highlighted Ethiopia’s vast cultural heritage and historical legacy, emphasizing the importance of joint initiatives with Russia to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

Ethiopia’s Role in BRICS and People-to-People Ties
The meeting also touched on Ethiopia’s efforts to showcase its cultural and artistic wealth to BRICS member nations ,a move aimed at fostering stronger global connections. Ambassador Terekhin affirmed Russia’s support for these initiatives, underscoring Moscow’s commitment to collaborating with Addis Ababa in cultural diplomacy and grassroots engagement.

Future Steps: A Memorandum of Understanding
In a significant step forward, both parties agreed to draft a joint memorandum of understanding (MoU)to formalize their cooperation and further solidify diplomatic relations. This agreement is expected to pave the way for structured cultural exchanges, joint art exhibitions, and sports programs between the two countries.

Strengthening Longstanding Ties
Ethiopia and Russia share a long history of diplomatic and economic relations. This latest move signals a renewed effort to leverage soft power through culture, art, and sports to strengthen bilateral ties. The Ministry of Culture and Sports confirmed that follow-up discussions will take place to finalize the details of the proposed MoU.

As Ethiopia continues to engage with global partners, its collaboration with Russia in these key areas could serve as a model for South-South and East-West cultural partnerships.
