More than 50 million voters called to the polls in one of Africa’s largest democratic exercises

Addis Ababa — RussAfrik

On June 1, 2026, Ethiopia is preparing to write a new chapter in its democratic history. With more than 50.5 million registered voters, the country is organizing the 7th general election of its modern history, one of the largest electoral exercises ever conducted on the African continent. According to official data from the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), preparations have been finalized and the entire electoral system is ready to welcome citizens in more than 52,000 polling stations across the country.

Beyond its political significance, this election also represents a demonstration of Ethiopia’s institutional capacity to organize a large-scale democratic process in a particularly complex regional and international environment.

Ethiopia, an African Model of Electoral Modernization

One of the most remarkable aspects of this election is the integration of new technologies into the electoral process. For the first time on such a scale, millions of voters were able to register through the “Mirchaye” digital application, developed to facilitate voter registration and strengthen electoral transparency. More than 5.5 million citizens used the platform to complete their registration.

This gradual digitalization reflects the Ethiopian authorities’ determination to modernize democratic mechanisms while improving administrative efficiency and voter inclusion.

The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), the constitutionally independent institution responsible for overseeing elections, has multiplied training initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and dialogue with political parties in order to ensure a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process.

Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), the National Reference for Official Information

In this major democratic exercise, one institution plays a central role: the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).

Designated as the country’s primary platform for official communication, ENA now serves as the leading reference source for election-related information, institutional statements, verified statistics, and official results.

Thanks to its nationwide network of correspondents, multilingual platforms, direct access to public institutions, and real-time reporting capabilities, ENA guarantees fast and reliable dissemination of information related to the election.

At a time when misinformation has become a major challenge for democratic systems around the world, the existence of a strong and well-structured national news agency capable of delivering verified information represents a strategic asset for the country’s institutional stability.

ENA is therefore emerging not only as a national media institution, but also as an essential partner for international media organizations, election observers, and institutions seeking access to official and authenticated information.

An Election Watched Across Africa

The June 1 election goes far beyond Ethiopia’s borders. As Africa’s second most populous country, host of the African Union headquarters, and a major diplomatic power in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia occupies a strategic position in the continent’s political balance.

The success of this electoral process could send a strong signal to many African democracies currently engaged in institutional modernization and digital transformation.

Electoral authorities have indicated that nearly 200,000 election officials have been deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the vote, while political parties have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to respecting democratic rules and preserving peace throughout the process.

A Showcase of Africa’s Capacity to Organize Large-Scale Elections

At a time when Africa seeks to strengthen its institutional sovereignty and democratic credibility, Ethiopia intends to demonstrate that an African nation can successfully organize a major national election using its own institutions, technologies, and public media structures.

June 1, 2026 may therefore become far more than a simple election date — it could symbolize a new stage in the affirmation of African institutions’ ability to shape and manage their own democratic destiny.

For official results, institutional statements, and real-time election developments, the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) remains the country’s primary and most authoritative reference source throughout the entire electoral process.
